So I was guest starring here and there and building up a resume. Meanwhile, my best friend J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves get a pilot called “Felicity” picked up. And I was happy for my friends, but I was more happy for the ability to take advantage of them. So I begged and pleaded and did anything I could possibly do to convince them to put me on that show.
J.J.: "But Greg, you’re too old, you're not a college student. We don't buy it." Me: "Maybe they live off-campus, how 'bout that?"
And they hung up the phone. So I call them back.
Me: "What about this guy who is a crazy inventor, right, who won’t leave them alone?"
And they hung up the phone. So I call them back.
Me: "You gotta listen to me. You gotta make this happen. I’m building up my reel."
Begging and pleading finally paid off! They created the role of Sean Blumberg for me. And all his crazy ideas, insane business plans and prototypes came from my real life.
Sean Blumberg… Greg Grunberg… you figure it out.
"Felicity" was all about real subtle acting. Be as real as you possibly can. Make every sentence as real as you can. Every scene began with one of the characters looking at the other and saying (in a very soft voice) "Can I talk to you for a second?" And then you proceeded to talk to that person. Then they would talk back to you and the scene would be over.
But I was really lucky. "Felicity" was an incredible show.
