When Heroes returned to NBC for the Season 4 premiere last night, there was plenty more fun and games for the supernatural characters we’ve come to know and love in the sci-fi drama. We recently caught up with star Greg Grunberg who told TV Guide Magazine what fans can expect later this season, how Sylar will seek revenge on Matt and why this is the year that Heroes will finally got its groove back.
What’s coming up for Matt as this season unfolds?
At the end of last year, we had they all turned to who we all knew was the most powerful character on the show Matt Parkman to try to take care of Sylar. I pushed the memories from Nathan into Sylar and there was shape shifting that happened. Well, it didn’t go cleanly so my character is now dealing with Sylar’s evil side.
What’s an example of something Matt does under Sylar’s influence?
Well, he would normally make love to his wife and instead he’s extremely rough. Let’s just put it that way. There’s a scene that we shot and I have no idea whether they’re going to air it or not especially at 8 o’clock. Matt and Janice are getting down and it’s not Matt so she’s like, “Wow, this is amazing! What are you doing?”
So there’s rough sex on Heroes this season?
Oh yeah! Bring it on baby. I’m getting it. I’m not in control of it but I’m getting it.
Do you and Zach have lot of scenes together then?
We do. We’ve been working together a lot and we’re loving it. We’re having fun.
Heroes has gotten a lot of flack from critics the past few seasons. Why should we tune in this year?
A show like this is hard to maintain. You can’t please everyone all the time. We’re just hitting a great stride this year and bringing the characters back to the root of where they started. Like my character Matt does not want to use his powers. He just wants to have his life back and he can’t because this evil guy is in his head. So it’s going back to, “How do I deal with the powers that I’ve been given?” That’s what was so magical about the first. The characters were discovering their powers so it’s a rediscovery this year
But you feel like you’re back on track this season?
Yeah.
Robert Knepper made his debut as an evil carnival baker last night. Will Matt be involved with the carnie folk?
So far I haven’t been but Robert Knepper is unbelievably strong. He’s so good. So far they’ve roped a few of us in. That’s their objective, to rope all of the main characters into the carnival. It’s a creepy idea when you think about it that these people who are running the carnival are people with abilities who are hiding out right in the open. It makes you not want to go to a carnival anymore. The county fair doesn’t look so friendly anymore!
How do you keep from getting killed on a show like this where the death toll is so high?
I take naked pictures of Tim I can release them at any time. No! As an actor, you can’t think about that but I’ve never loved the material on this show more than I love it now. It’s just great! So hopefully the audience will keep responding and the writers will love writing for it.
Speaking of high body counts, will you be back for Lost’s final season as the pilot of Oceanic Flight 815?
They’ve asked. Every time I talk to JJ [Abrams], either I ask him or he asks me so hopefully that will come together. I’m such a fan of that show so I would love to do a flashback or wrap it up or something but, so far, there’s no solid plans to go back.
Do you think it will work out?
Yeah, I would think. Again, naked pictures! [Laughs] It’s weird I have naked pictures of him and Tim together.
So how did you spend your summer hiatus?
There’s been no hiatus for me. It’s been crazy. I love business. I came up with this idea to create an iPhone application called Yowza!! where coupons from stores right around you come up. It knows where you are and it’s free. It’s incredible! The response has been amazing.
Do you think we’ll Matt Parkman using Yowza!! on his iPhone this season?
[Laughs] Yeah, there are going to be hidden Yowzas throughout the show if I have anything to do with it!
